Firm acquires brand’s IP rights for $80 million.
Hasbro has secured all rights to the Trivial Pursuit brand from Horn Abbot.
The firm expects to expand the perennial brand into television, with a new game show called Trivial Pursuit: America Plays scheduled to air in the US in September.
Prior to this latest deal the Hasbro licensed the property from creators, Scott Abbot, Chris and John Haney, who set up Horn Abbot, since 1991, after acquiring Parker Brothers. As part of the deal Hasbro was required to pay a percentage of sales to Horn Abbot.
Phil Jackson, Hasbro’s group executive for games, said: “The licensing agreement was fruitful for both parties. Whole ownership gives us the chance to increase visibility and capitalisation of the brand in areas like digital entertainment, publishing, promoting, television and anything else that comes over the horizon.”
