New warnings for magnetic toys

Government consults on warning labels to better protect children.
Toys containing small magnets are set to carry new safety warnings, according to the Department for Business Enterprise and Regualatory Reform.
The Government is currently consulting a proposal, which will see toys in the supply chain as well as those not yet on the market, carry new warning labels.
Likely to come into effect as early as July, the new warning will alert parents to a product containing magnets or magnetic components and how, if swallowed or inhaled, can cause serious, even fatal injury and that immediate medical attention is required.
The new safety measure will have to be clearly visible to consumers on the toy’s packaging or toy at the point of purchase.
However, If the proposal does come into effect, it will remain in force only until the European Commission and its Member States complete reviews of toy safety controls.
As part of the consultation process, the public is invited to comment, up until May 16th, on how the UK plans to implement the warning requirement.
Consumer Affairs Minister Gareth Thomas (pictured) said: "We want toys containing small magnets to carry new safety warnings. The recalls last year highlighted the dangers that they can pose.
"The warnings will help parents make informed decisions about which toys to buy and to be on their guard in supervising how their children play with them."
