Mattel wins patent payout

Mattel has won a $5.7 million lawsuit against Dorel Industries Safety 1st unit.
The firm’s Fisher-Price division sued Montreal-based Dorel in 2001 claiming that some of the company's Bouncenette bouncers and Magic Motion bassinets infringed Mattel's patents. Dorel makes ready-to-assemble furniture and children's products such as car seats and strollers. The company's juvenile-products group, makes goods under the Safety 1st and Cosco brands.
US District Judge Gregory Sleet in Wilmington added $3.4 million in interest to a $2.3 million jury verdict against Safety 1st.
A jury ruled in 2003 that Safety 1st infringed three patents and awarded $1.9 million. Sleet later cut that to $1 million. Another jury in 2006 added $1.3 million to the verdict after an appeals court cleared the way for additional damages.
"The court has concluded that the jury's damages award was supported by substantial evidence," Sleet wrote.
He denied a Fisher-Price motion to triple the jury's award based on a ruling of intentional infringement.

The $5.7 million is INCORRECT.
The actual amount is $3.4 million. The Court made a mistake in transcribing the amounts. The interest was NOT tripled and in fact is $1.1 million.
