With the licence already set to become an unexpected Chrstmas success, Mattel is bringing forward the release of its DVD board game of Disney’s surprise teen hit, High School Musical.

The High School Musical interactive DVD board game will be available from February, earlier than previously expected, and the company’s High School Musical branded portfolio will also include UNO cards and a Magic 8 Ball as well singing character dolls which are set for a May launch.

The show was first aired on the Disney Channel in September with over one million viewers tuning in to see the first broadcast.

The compilation album hit pole position in the charts and DVD sales have also been strong.  The official Disney website has been receiving hundreds of thousands of hits every week and around 6,000 sets of lyrics were downloaded in one 24-hour period along.  Terrestrial broadcast is now scheduled for 23rd December on BBC1.

Jean-Christophe Pean, general manager of Mattel, commented: “We all knew High School Musical was going to be big, but I think many have underestimated just quite how big the opportunity could be.  We are really pleased to be the first toy manufacturer in a position to meet this staggering demand from consumers.”
