Mattel's move into third party product distribution has been boosted with the opening of a new warehouse facility.

The new facilities in Corby went operational on 1st May and are automated to allow for greater flexibility and more efficient picking.  At the site the products are stocked individually so there is less risk of damage and wastage.  The site offers increased capacity for 20,000 pallets and will employ a core team of 60 people, with the potential to increase to 250 at peak times.

Jean Christophe Pean, general manager, Mattel UK explained: "When we examined our business at the back end of last year we knew that 2007 had real potential for us to make that all important step change, and the first half of the year has already demonstrated that, with Barbie regaining her market share week by week, along with our new third party relationships we knew it was important that we had the infrastructure to service this potential.

"Although our facilities have always been excellent it’s important that we continue to improve and build on our infrastructure so we can service our retail partners efficiently and timely to maximise every sales opportunity and get the right toy to the right retailer at the right time."

He added:  "This new facility is a very exciting step for Mattel UK and is important in our plans to make sure we can continue to service the trade in the most cost effective and efficient way".
