Mattel is lobbying the US Congress to conduct in-house certification of its toys rather than independent lab testing.
The firm has argued that some toy companies may have more sohpisticated laboratories than independent companies.
Some lawmakers and consumer advocates, however, have expressed apprehension over the proposed law becuase it would create a conflict of interest and may compromise safety.
Senator Byron Dorgan, who is pushing for independent lab testing, told the Chicago Tribune: "Companies that are going to do testing, obviously they have a vested interest in the oucome of the test.
From the standpoint of a consumer, there's much more credibility to independent testing."
The House and Senate will meet next week to deal with the proposed amendment.
